Motwani Ideation Accelerator
MIA started in 2014 to promote entrepreneurship with the generous funding by the Motwani Foundation. Motwani Ideation Accelerator is a soft facility in the domain of embedded systems, platforms, algorithms and IT related ideas. It is established in the newly built Motwani building (by donation of $1.5 million by the Motwani family), IIT Kanpur and is under the guidance of SIIC. It has working space for several companies and the student body Entrepreneurship Cell of the campus.
SIDBI Innovation & Incubation Centre
SIDBI Innovation & Incubation Centre (SIIC) at IIT Kanpur was set up in collaboration with Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) to foster innovation, research and entrepreneurial activities in technology related areas. Established in 2000 with the vision of transforming knowledge into wealth, the centre has a twofold vision: To create a generation of zealous entrepreneurs and to convert novel research into valuable intellectual property. SIIC today stands as a National Award winning Technology Business Incubator.
SIIC offers a whole gamut of incubation facilities and services to prospective entrepreneurs to convert their innovative ideas into commercially viable products. SIIC incubates ventures in technology, engineering and other interdisciplinary areas. Regular events like entrepreneurial talk series, workshops and seminars have offered SIIC a good interface and visibility in the region. SIIC can incubate on an average 33 companies. Since its inception, it has incubated and mentored 53 companies of which 26 have already graduated. SIIC acts as a Technology Transfer Office of the Institute and provides professional aid to the IITK Faculty and students for filing patents and copyrights. So far, it has filed 242 patents.

The Tinkering Laboratory is a platform for creative minds to come out of their think space to transform their ideas into real-time engineering objects, and eventually to products and patents. The Tinkering Lab was initiated by the Batch of 1986 during their Silver Jubilee Reunion in December 2010. The batch created a corpus of Rs 70 lakhs for the lab, and the institute gave a matching grant. In January 2013, the Batch of 1976 decided to join hands and has committed an additional Rs 50 lakhs towards the corpus. The lab is accessible to all the students and start-up owners to test, validate and prototype their ideas into new products and services, specifically in the areas of advanced technology domain. The Tinkering Lab has been set up by the SIIC, IIT Kanpur in collaboration with NSTEDB (National Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board).
The 4 is stand for Innovation, Integration, Incubation and Implementation. The lab is a central facility for concept design and product realization. The processes of design, simulation and manufacturing are integrated in a digital environment. The facility also serves the professional course requirements of students of various streams. It also provides infrastructure for sponsored research and industrial consultancy. The 4i lab houses state of the art CAD and CAM tools with latest capabilities in shape acquisition, modelling and prototyping. They have helped in radically expanding the domain of geometric shapes that can be realized for any product
There have been two venture funds launched as a part of the Motwani Incubation and Accelerator. These are:
The Rajeev Motwani Impact Fund- to support ground breaking ideas and designed specifically for the bottom half of the economic pyramid, dealing with poverty alleviation, non-formal learning/education/tech for the poor, mobile health support.
The Rajeev Motwani Venture Fund- to encourage ideas emerging from Indian academia to help the creation of the next generation mobile internet, the internet of things, and the health technologies.
This is an initiative of the Entrepreneurship Cell to assure the much needed mentorship to the start-ups run by students. There are projects in the areas of healthcare, mobile technology, online merchandise, gaming technology and many more. E-Cell plays the role of connecting the students who have the aforementioned ventures to appropriate mentors. The mentors could be from amongst the alumni working in that area, or esteemed industrialists in that sector, or professors from reputed institutions who have experience in that field. Thus, E-Cell is the one-stop solution to all problems a start-up or a newly grown idea might face in becoming an accomplished dream!
Anyone in need of connecting to a mentor for suggestions regarding his/her venture can contact the Head of Corporate Relations of E-Cell, Shashwat Saxena.
Deferred Placement Program
Catering to the increasing number of students opting for entrepreneurship over placements, a novel program called the Deferred Placement Program has been introduced at IIT Kanpur. Deferred placements enable the students to defer placements by a year or two to start their own ventures. They can come back and seek campus placements if their ventures fail. These have been in existence in the IIMs for quite a long time but are now gaining grounds in the IITs.
By this programme, students are assured of wise risk management in case their venture doesn’t work out.
