InMobi is a million dollar firm and ranks second globally in mobile advertisement only after Google. It serves over 1 billion ads daily with more than 690 million users spread across 160 nations. It has the two IITK alumni Mr Navin Tiwary & Mr Abhay Jindal as director and co-director of InMobi respectively. As far as Abhay was concerned, he didn’t want to get old sitting in front of a computer, scratching his mind to get some #include fstream kind of stuff out of it. And so he went on to achieve his dreams. Today, InMobi is used by world’s largest brands, agencies and developers to enhance their business value by delivering compelling value propositions to their target customers. It offers numerous solutions to engage retain and influence global consumers in a very intimate way using mobile advertising.


Knowlarity Communications Pvt. Ltd. is a cloud based telephony Gurgaon, India. It provides voice applications to small and medium enterprises. As of January, 2013, Knowlarity has clients in 65 countries. Founded in 2009, by Ambarish Gupta and Pallav Pandey from IIT Kanpur came together to revolutionize business telephony in India. It is cost effective and enables a suite of awesome features (professional call handling, detailed call logs, CRM integration to name a few) that actually improve business processes. The impact of cloud telephony is limitless in aiding and improving business processes for organizations of all sizes. It has solved tracking and monitoring issues in the Mid-day Meal Scheme (a project for provision of lunch, free of cost to school-children, below the poverty line, on all working days) for the Government of Uttar Pradesh using software called SuperCaller. In Jan 2012, Sequoia Capital invested $6.6m in the company to acquire a minority stake.


ncorporated in December, 2011 by Sahil Bagla, 22, and Ayush Varshney, 20, two students of IIT Kanpur, it started as an online customised poster selling site with an initial capital of Rs 50,000 taken out from their savings and scholarships. Their idea was selected by TLabs (a Times Internet Ltd initiative) for seed funding of Rs 10 lakh and a six-month mentorship for which it moved to Delhi. Then it ran as full-fledged online sales website that specializes in fan merchandise, customised T-shirts, iPad or laptop skins, posters etc. But due to some issues, they had to shut down. But they didn’t stop and now, they run a content-oriented website where one can make and find thousands of lists of visuals. Many of them are funny, many of them are informative; in short it’s a complete package.


Mukesh Bansal, B.Tech in Computer Science from IITK, co-founded with Ashutosh Lawania, with a vision of creating India’s largest on-demand personalization portal. The company has now expanded into fashion and retailing. It now ranks amongst the leading e-commerce companies in India and is the largest online destination for fashion and lifestyle products with over 500 brands with over 60000 products under its umbrella. In May 2014, it merged with another Indian e- commerce giant Flipkart to become a formidable force against Amazon which entered the Indian market in June 2013.

In October 2007, it received its initial funding from Erasmic Venture Fund, now called Accel Partners, Sasha Mirchandani from Mumbai Angels and a few other investors. The company launched its first private brand in December 2013 and has launched 8 different brands like Roadster, HRX, ETC, Dresssberry, etc since then. It has been awarded ‘Best E-Commerce Partner of the year 2011-12’ by Puma India.


It is an online question and answer platform founded by an IITK alumnus in Computer Science, Pooja Sankar which facilitates interaction between students and faculty even outside the classroom anytime anywhere. A professor can create online classroom where the teaching assistants and students can join in to discuss doubts, assignments, etc. It is multi-million dollar company recognized worldwide for its services and is used by renowned institutions like Stanford University, UC Berkley, MIT, Cornell, CalTech and many others, IIT Kanpur, and many others. It has its motivation from the skewed sex ratio of IIT Kanpur, which made Pooja, one of the 3 girls in a class of 50, too shy and uncomfortable to participate in the group learning process. She was thus being led behind because she got stuck at nuances and couldn’t be helped by her male classmates. She designed the prototype herself and pitched to a professor in Stanford who was impressed by the idea and decided to use it for his course. She then hired a designer and worked together to improve Piazza. Piazza has expanded with support from Sequoia Capital, Bessemer Venture Partners, etc.


Founded by Prashant Gupta, a student at IIT Kanpur, the website enables one to file RTI (Right To Information) online and it has registered 3000 RTIs so far. The idea lies behind in realising the difference between having a right and exercising the same. It provides a platform to its registered userbase of 5000 to exercise their rights. Once the application is filed, it takes 2-3 days to process it. The Public Information Officer takes 30-40 days to reply to the application and replies are sent directly to the individual.


Aloke Bajpai was still studying Electrical Engineering at IIT Kanpur when his fling for entrepreneurship began in a B-Plan Competition. But he took up a job later and worked at a travel company where he came to know how misfit he was for the job! The CEO Aloke co-founded it with Rajnish Kumar(CTO), a batch mate of IIT Kanpur, when iXiGO set foot in the air travel space of 2006 when many new airlines were coming up. He got in touch with his first investor via the INEAD network He found a good advisor as well as his team there at INSEAD. The 2008 credit crisis was indeed an acid test which actually led to iXiGO’s growth. None of the employees left and the organisation held its roots firmer in the market. Its business model was validated during that time as people were looking for best deals using price comparison. iXiGO is a platform to compare air fares across several portals or to plan a travel which would be lovely as well as befitting one’s budget.

Aurus Network

A cloud based platform for delivering live and on-demand, media-based online/distance education and training is a way to transform how distance/ online education works. It was founded in 2010 by Piyush Agarwal who has spent both his graduate and post-graduate days at IIT Kanpur. The platform can be used as an automated solution for large scale, university wide lecture capture and publishing, with in-built features like web based lecture video editing, social networking, search and analytics, etc. It is now expanding to other markets in the US, UK, Australia where students are willing to pay extra for this kind of a facility.

Janardan was keenly interested in solving traffic issues since his college days at IIT Kanpur. He worked for some time in a corporate firm after which he conceptualised his idea of He had met his fellow student Mukesh Jha at IITK in 1998 who later became his co- founder. It is India’s 24x7 auto-rickshaw service platform helping both users and drivers in cities like Bangalore and Pune. Travellers can book a rickshaw using Autowale’s website, call centre or Android app and get an auto with a driver who will arrive on time, behave professionally and charge only as per the metre. Looking at the current scenario, they have transcended the limits of installing GPS in auto rickshaws or supplying drivers with cell phones by writing their own smart algorithm which enables them to predict where a driver is going to be, based on his first trip and patterns of connectivity typically achieved during the day. Autowale is supported by EMBARQ, the Shell Foundation, the Global Super Angels Forum (GSF), which provides angel and seed investing to start-ups in India and abroad.


Infosys Ltd. is an Indian multinational corporation that provides business consulting, information technology and software services. It is now the third largest India-based IT services company. It was co-founded by 7 people who resigned from Patni Computer Systems. One among them was Narayan Murthy. He has completed his M.Tech from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He served as the CEO from 1981 to 2002 and then as Chairman of Infosys from 2002 to 2011. It had an initial capital of Rs 10000 and became a public company in June, 2011. Infosys now has a global presence with 72 offices and 94 development centres in the US, India, China, Japan, Australia, Middle East and Europe. One of its known products Finacle, is a universal banking solution with various modules for retail and corporate banking.

Urban Clap

UrbanClap is a mobile based services marketplace in India. It was founded by Abhiraj Bhal (IITK alumnus), Raghav Chandra and Varun Khaitan (IITK alumnus) in October, 2014. UrbanClap helps you find the right service professionals for activities important to you. Whether you are looking to decorate your home, get candid pictures of your wedding, plan your kid’s birthday or get healthier, they provide a sure shot destination for your service needs. Their vision is to use technology and smart processes to structure the highly unorganized services market in India. UrbanClap aspires to make hiring a service professional as easy and straightforward as Amazon or Flipkart have made buying products. The company has received series A and seed funding from Accel, SAIF partners and Snapdeal founders, Rohit Bansal and Kunal Bahl.


Pariskha is founded by Utkarsh Bagri (IITK alumnus). Pariksha for students is analytics driven, gamification modeled, adaptive testing and mastery learning based online exam preparation practice and assessment platform. It highlights students’ strengths, weaknesses, accuracy and speed. It tracks performance/improvement real time/over time and provides continues error free feedback. Comparative tools allow students to compare their performance with others. It saves time and increases the preparation efficiency of students. Pariksha is born out of personal experience and the purpose is to change the way students prepare and succeed with the help of cutting edge technology.


Teewe is a start-up which makes Teewe. Teewe is an HDMI Dongle, which allows you to stream media wirelessly via a smartphone application to your television. Teewe was co-founded by Sai Srinivas Kiran G (IITK alumnus) and Shubham Malhotra. Teewe allows people to play anything on their TV at any time from the comfort of their couch. All they need to do is plug the device in their TV’s HDMI port and download the Teewe app. Teewe was released online on 28th August 2014 through the online portal Snapdeal and then consequently on Flipkart in late December 2014. Recently, they’ve also launched their second edition of Teewe.


Co-Founded by Arun Srinivasan and Ankur Gupta (IITK alumnus). AdWyze helps you do performance marketing at scale and improve the ROI of your marketing channels. Basically it’s a Marketing analysis, automation, and optimization platform. It moves one’s marketing beyond spreadsheets and SQL Queries. Recently it received a funding of $1mn from Mape Advisory.


Gapoon is an online platform where you can hire trusted and verified professionals including plumbers, electricians, computer repairmen and house cleaners. By hassle-free single click appointment booking process, Gapoon helps you connect with best local tradesmen of your choice.  As the problems may come unannounced, Gapoon understands the urgency of your situation by providing option of ‘Urgent Appointment’ at no extra cost. It ensures that an apt serviceman reaches your doorstep within 2 hours. Gapoon was co-founded by IITK alumni Apoorva Mishra, Ankit Bindal and Ankita Asai in Bangalore in February, 2015. Its mission is to organise the highly disorganised home maintenance services market in India.


Arkin Net is a start-up founded by IIT Kanpur alumni Shiv Agarwal, Mukul Gupta, Rohit Toshniwal and IIT Bombay graduate Abhijit Sharma. Arkin delivers instant and comprehensive search across entire data center (virtual and physical) for operational visibility, rapid troubleshooting and consistent security. It’s designed and built for radical simplification of data centre operations. With Google Search-like simplicity and consumer-class collaboration, Arkin delivers seamless operations for converged infrastructures and software-defined data centers built using technologies such as VMware NSX, Cisco UCS, VCE Vblocks, Palo Alto Networks firewalls and others. Arkin ties together the data center silos across virtual and physical platforms. Some of the largest enterprises have deployed Arkin to simplify their operations and unlock significant cost savings and agility. It has recently raised $15 million Series B investment from Nexus Venture Partners.


Naaptol was started by founder and CEO Manu Agarwal an IIT Kanpur alumnus in January 2008 as a product research and price comparison service. In 2009 it adapted the marketplace model and stated selling products online. Now it is a full-fledged E-Commerce website with a wide variety of products. It has now entered in the print media market too. In 2015, raised Rs. 136 crore from Japanese conglomerate Mitsui & Co.


Co-Founded by IITK alumnus Tonmoy Shingal and IITR alumnus Ketan Kapoor. Mettl's flagship product is an online assessment solution for testing technical, aptitude and psychometric skills of potential candidates. The solution helps companies measure, analyze and improve people skills. Mettl has caught on now with about 150-200 clients of which 10 are global organizations. Some of the prominent ones include Cognizant, Capgemini, Accenture, Wipro, HCL, Inmobi and The company plans to gain an international footprint and has already started penetrating in the US and Gulf countries. To concentrate on high areas of growth Mettl has chosen to focus on verticals like IT, Education and Training, BPO and KPO and conducting pilots for BFSI and retail sector.

CipherGraph Networks

CipherGraph Networks is a computer networking software company, specializing in cloud security based in Pleasanton, California. CipherGraph Networks offers businesses security for data and applications hosted on public and private clouds. Their flagship offering is the CipherGraph Cloud Access Gateway. CipherGraph was founded in 2011 by Jitender Sharan (IITK alumnus). CipherGraph won several awards like Microsoft BizSpark Startup Challenge, Nasscom Emerge 50 2012 among others. CipherGraph was added to the Amazon Web Services Partner Network in 2012.

Aurora Intergrated Systems

AIS was started by a team of seven graduates from IIT Kanpur involved in developing and manufacturing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) for civil and defence markets. It is the lead system integrator in India, offering field-tested UAS technology. The competencies of AIS encompass Embedded Systems Development, Computer Vision Solutions, Aircraft Design, Network Solutions and Guidance & Control. This Bangalore based company is developing indigenous technology, manufacturing and integrating state-of-the-art airborne systems with a focus on small Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS). AIS is supported and funded by the Tata group and by the Ministry of Science and Technology. AIS is the first company developing UAV technology in India without foreign assistance allowing it to pass on the economic benefits to the consumers. Their systems encompass short range SUAVs to long-range tactical systems, rapidly deployable Aerostat Systems, and technologies in Inertial Navigation. The company counts DRDO and the Indian Army as its clients.

Juniper Networks

Juniper Networks is a multinational corporation headquartered in Sunnyvale, California that develops and markets networking products. Its products include routers, switches, network management software, network security products and software-defined networking technology. Juniper was founded in 1996 by Pradeep Sindhu (IITK alumnus). The company received several rounds of funding from venture capitalists and telecommunications companies before going public in 1999. Through the acquisition of Unisphere in 2002, Juniper entered the market for edge routers. Juniper entered the IT security market with its own JProtect security toolkit in 2003, before acquiring security company NetScreen Technologies the following year. It entered the enterprise segment in the early 2000s, which accounted for one-third of revenues by 2005. As of 2014, Juniper has been focused on developing new software-defined networking products.

Keynote Systems

Founded in 1995 by Umang Gupta (IITK alumnus). Keynote Systems is a global provider of Internet and mobile cloud monitoring and testing solutions. The Company provides cloud-based testing, monitoring and measurement products and services that enable its customers to know how their Web sites, content, and applications perform on nearly any combination of actual browsers, networks and mobile devices. It delivers products and services primarily through a cloud-based model on a subscription basis to a customer base, representing a cross-section of industries. It offers a portfolio of Internet and mobile products and services to optimize the end-user customer experience in two categories: Internet Cloud (Internet Cloud) and Mobile Cloud (Mobile Cloud). Headquartered in San Mateo, California, and employing ~300 people, the company went public on NASDAQ on September 24, 1999. The company claims over 2,800 corporate customers representing top Internet and mobile companies including American Express, BP, Caterpillar, Disney, eBay, E*TRADE, Expedia, Microsoft, Sony Ericsson, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon and Vodafone. On October 18, 2011, the Company acquired DeviceAnywhere. Keynote Systems is also on the Forbes’ Lists- #54 America's Best Small Companies (2012).


Jambool was an ecommerce company founded by veterans Reza Hussein and Vikas Gupta (IITK alumnus) in San-Francisco in 2006. It operated Social Gold, a virtual goods monetization platform. Social Gold enables developers to create and manage their own white-labeled virtual currency, to provide an in-app payments experience to their users, and analytics to monitor their virtual economy. Social Gold powered the virtual currency and payment solutions for thousands of online games and virtual worlds. Social Gold was "hit hard" by the introduction of Facebook Credits, Facebook's official way of offering in-app payments for Facebook widgets. Jambool was acquired by Google on August 13, 2010, for approximately 70 million dollars. After Google's acquisition, Jambool employees worked on Google's in-app payments platform for web applications. Jambool's founder and CEO Vikas Gupta joined Google as Head of Consumer Payments, and eventually left Google in January 2012.
